I saw The Road after I read the novel by the same title. The movie was true to the book, save for one scene that was left out, fortunately. As with the book, it was never explained what caused the catastrophe but the love between the two main characters was poignant. I have to say that the book was more of a downer than the movie, which seemed uplifting (sort of), given the adversity that had to be overcome on a daily basis just to survive. It's unlikely to be in theaters now, so do catch it on dvd.

Bunny Lebowski: Uli doesn't care about anything. He's a Nihilist.

The Dude: Ah, that must be exhausting.

The book being a downer is no surprise.  I'm not sure McCarthy can write anything that isn't a downer.  I have not been able to mkae my way through Suttree because of that very thing.  I will see The Road, but not sure I'd read the book.  Do you recommend reading it before seeing the movie.  I sure hope not.

In this case, go ahead and see the movie. The book is even more graphic than the motion picture. I'll say this though, for once it's nice to see a movie that actually follows the book from which it originated.
